YOU ARE WORTHY OF FEELING SAFE.

Trauma

Historically speaking, trauma has been understood as something that happens to people that were in war zones, experienced an assault of some sort, or a tragic accident. Although these events can be traumatizing, this is only one type of trauma. In trauma we continually live with the fear, tension, activation and other sensations that were present when we experienced the original event or events. Trauma then, is not necessarily about the event, but how the sensations we experienced during the event continue to show up in our bodies and hijack our overall well-being. Living in a constant experience of being overwhelmed results in either a chronic sense of numbness and shutdown, or it shows up in ever present tension, tightness, anxiety, and activation. Simply put, it’s exhausting.

This constant shutdown and/or activation can cause all sorts of issues that we traditionally treat with medicine such as chronic headaches or migraines, upset stomach, unexplained neck, back or stomach pain, feeling foggy or numb, difficulty concentrating and more. This is not to say that all headaches or body pain should be attributed to trauma. Everything is connected, and this is no different.

Resolving trauma is a journey. In our work together, I’ll help you discover a felt sense of safety in your body again. This is done by first building an awareness to the physical sensations that happen inside the body such as heat, tension, tingling, feeling hollow, etc. After understanding the sensations in your body, we’ll begin to associate feelings and emotions to those sensations. In addition to building awareness to the emotions that are triggering, we’ll also learn what relaxation, ease and safety feel like in your body. My goal is to help you establish a felt sense of safety.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) and Developmental Trauma Disorder (DTD) are all current and prospective trauma related disorders. Diagnoses are important, but there is no way they can take into account the complexity that is your lived experience. Trauma is a wound, and wounds can be healed.

“Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves.”
